"Doctor Strange" (2016) introduces the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the mystical and magical realms through the journey of Dr. Stephen Strange. The film opens with the talented but arrogant neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange living a life of luxury and prestige in New York City. His life changes dramatically when a devastating car accident severely damages his hands, ending his surgical career.

Desperate to heal his hands and regain his former life, Strange exhausts all conventional and experimental medical treatments, to no avail. His obsession alienates those around him, including his former lover and colleague, Dr. Christine Palmer. Strange's search for a miracle leads him to Nepal, where he hears about a man who recovered from a seemingly irreversible spinal injury.

In Kathmandu, Strange is guided to Kamar-Taj, a secret compound where he meets Mordo, a Master of the Mystic Arts, and the Ancient One, the enigmatic leader who reveals the existence of magic and alternate dimensions. Initially skeptical, Strange's disbelief is shattered when the Ancient One shows him the Astral Plane and the Multiverse. He begs to be taught, and the Ancient One agrees, despite Mordo's reservations.

As Strange delves into his studies, he learns to manipulate mystical energy and master spells. His photographic memory and intellect make him a quick learner, but his ego and impatience remain obstacles. He discovers various mystical relics, including the Eye of Agamotto, a powerful artifact housing the Time Stone, one of the Infinity Stones.

Strange learns about the threat posed by Kaecilius, a former student of the Ancient One who has turned rogue. Kaecilius and his zealots seek to summon Dormammu, a malevolent entity from the Dark Dimension, to gain eternal life and reshape the world. They attack the Sanctums, mystical buildings in New York, London, and Hong Kong that protect Earth from other-dimensional threats.

After Kaecilius destroys the London Sanctum and attacks the New York Sanctum, Strange is thrust into a battle with the zealots. With the help of the sentient Cloak of Levitation, Strange manages to subdue one of the zealots and learns more about Kaecilius' plan. However, he is gravely injured and returns to Christine for medical assistance, experiencing an astral battle in the process.

Upon returning to Kamar-Taj, Strange confronts the Ancient One about her use of dark magic to extend her life. She defends her actions as necessary to protect Earth but warns Strange of the cost of his ambitions. The New York Sanctum is attacked again, leading to a confrontation where the Ancient One is fatally wounded. In her dying moments, she advises Strange to move beyond his ego and embrace his role as a protector.

The climax of the film sees Strange and Mordo travel to Hong Kong, only to find the Sanctum there destroyed and the city being consumed by the Dark Dimension. Using the Eye of Agamotto, Strange reverses time to save the city and its inhabitants. In a final showdown, Strange creates a time loop in the Dark Dimension, trapping himself and Dormammu in an endless cycle. Dormammu, frustrated by his inability to escape, agrees to leave Earth and take Kaecilius and his zealots with him in exchange for Strange breaking the loop.

With the threat averted, Mordo becomes disillusioned with the Ancient One's teachings and Strange's bending of natural laws, believing such actions will have dire consequences. He leaves, vowing to abandon the ways of the Mystic Arts. Strange, now the protector of the New York Sanctum, embraces his new role as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme.

In the mid-credits scene, Strange meets Thor, offering his assistance to find Odin, setting up future events in the MCU. In a post-credits scene, Mordo confronts Pangborn, the man whose recovery led Strange to Kamar-Taj, and takes away his mystical abilities, declaring there are "too many sorcerers."

"Doctor Strange" explores themes of humility, self-discovery, and the acceptance of new perspectives, blending stunning visual effects with a compelling narrative about a man's journey from selfishness to selflessness.
