"Thor" (2011) introduces the Norse god Thor, the heir to the throne of Asgard, who is powerful but arrogant and reckless. The film begins with Thor preparing to ascend to the throne, but the ceremony is interrupted by Frost Giants attempting to retrieve an ancient artifact, the Casket of Ancient Winters, from Asgard's vault. Enraged, Thor disobeys his father Odin’s orders and attacks the Frost Giants' realm of Jotunheim, nearly starting a war.
To teach him humility, Odin strips Thor of his powers and banishes him to Earth, sending his enchanted hammer Mjolnir with him, with the enchantment that only someone worthy can lift it. On Earth, Thor is discovered by astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster, her mentor Dr. Erik Selvig, and her assistant Darcy Lewis. They are intrigued by Thor’s claims and his strange behavior.
Meanwhile, Thor's brother Loki discovers he is actually a Frost Giant, adopted by Odin after the last great war. Confused and feeling betrayed, Loki plots to take the throne for himself. He lets the Frost Giants into Asgard to kill Odin, who has fallen into a deep sleep, but eventually betrays them to prove his loyalty to Asgard.
On Earth, Thor learns humility and selflessness, building relationships with Jane and the others. He also learns about his brother’s betrayal and the danger Asgard faces. When S.H.I.E.L.D., led by Agent Phil Coulson, confiscates Jane's research and surrounds Mjolnir, Thor attempts to reclaim his hammer but finds himself unworthy. His despair and newfound humility enable him to become a true hero.
Loki sends the Destroyer, an unstoppable Asgardian automaton, to Earth to kill Thor. Thor willingly sacrifices himself to save his new friends, proving himself worthy. Mjolnir returns to him, restoring his powers. Thor defeats the Destroyer and returns to Asgard to confront Loki.
In a dramatic final battle on the Bifrost Bridge, Loki attempts to use the Bifrost to destroy Jotunheim, but Thor stops him, realizing that such an act would be against everything he has learned. Thor destroys the Bifrost to stop the destruction, stranding himself in Asgard and severing his connection to Jane. Loki falls into the void of space, seemingly to his death, but not before Odin acknowledges both sons’ worth.
The film ends with Thor reconciling with Odin, now a wiser and more humble warrior, while on Earth, Jane continues her research, hoping to find a way to reunite with Thor. The post-credits scene hints at future conflicts, with Dr. Selvig being taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility where he encounters Nick Fury and the Tesseract, an artifact of immense power, unknowingly influenced by Loki, who survived.
"Thor" explores themes of redemption, the value of humility and selflessness, and the complexities of familial loyalty, setting the stage for Thor’s crucial role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
