"Captain Marvel" (2019) introduces Carol Danvers, a former U.S. Air Force pilot who becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes. Set in the 1990s, the film explores Carol's journey to uncover her past and understand her true identity while caught in the middle of an intergalactic conflict between two alien races, the Kree and the Skrulls.
The story begins with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), known as Vers, living on the Kree home planet, Hala. She is a member of Starforce, an elite military team led by her mentor, Yon-Rogg (Jude Law). Vers suffers from amnesia, unable to recall her past but frequently experiencing vivid nightmares of an older woman (Annette Bening). Yon-Rogg trains her to control her powerful photon energy abilities and teaches her to suppress her emotions.
During a mission to rescue a Kree operative from a group of Skrulls, shape-shifting aliens led by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), Vers is captured. The Skrulls probe her memories, seeking information about Dr. Wendy Lawson, a scientist related to the powerful energy core they are searching for. Vers escapes and crash-lands on Earth, specifically in Los Angeles.
On Earth, Vers encounters S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg). Initially skeptical of her story, Fury becomes convinced of her extraterrestrial origins after a Skrull attack. Vers and Fury form an uneasy alliance to uncover the truth about her past and the Skrulls' intentions.
Vers and Fury retrieve Lawson's encrypted files from a secret military base, revealing that Lawson was a Kree scientist working on a lightspeed engine. They also discover that Lawson was actually Mar-Vell, a Kree who sought to end the Kree-Skrull war. Talos, who has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., confronts them but eventually reveals that the Skrulls are not the enemy. Instead, they are refugees seeking a new home, fleeing from the Kree's oppressive regime.
With Talos's help, Vers locates a hidden laboratory orbiting Earth where Mar-Vell hid the Tesseract, the source of the lightspeed engine's power. There, she encounters Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), her best friend and fellow pilot, who helps her piece together her forgotten past. Carol learns that she was presumed dead after a test flight gone wrong, during which she absorbed the energy from the engine's explosion, granting her extraordinary powers but erasing her memories.
Yon-Rogg and his Starforce team arrive on Earth, intent on capturing Vers and the Tesseract. In the ensuing battle, Carol unlocks her full potential, embracing her true identity as Carol Danvers and breaking free from the Kree's mental conditioning. She defeats Yon-Rogg and Starforce, sending Yon-Rogg back to Hala with a warning to the Supreme Intelligence.
Having embraced her powers and identity, Carol decides to help the Skrulls find a new home and put an end to the Kree-Skrull war. She leaves Earth, promising Fury that she will return if needed. Inspired by Carol's heroism, Fury begins the initiative to find more heroes, naming it the Avengers Initiative after Carol's Air Force call sign, "Avenger."
In the mid-credits scene, set in the present day, Carol arrives at the Avengers facility in response to Fury's pager, which he activated before being disintegrated during Thanos's snap in "Avengers: Infinity War." This scene sets up her role in the upcoming "Avengers: Endgame." In the post-credits scene, Goose, Carol's cat-like Flerken, regurgitates the Tesseract on Fury's desk.
"Captain Marvel" is a story of self-discovery, empowerment, and challenging the narratives imposed by others. It introduces a powerful new hero to the MCU and sets the stage for her significant role in the larger Avengers storyline. The film combines action, humor, and heart, emphasizing the themes of identity, resilience, and the fight for justice.
