"Iron Man 3" (2013) picks up after the events of "The Avengers," with Tony Stark grappling with the psychological fallout from the battle of New York. Suffering from anxiety attacks and insomnia, Stark becomes obsessed with creating new Iron Man suits, straining his relationship with Pepper Potts.
The story begins with a flashback to 1999, where Stark meets scientist Maya Hansen and shuns the crippled Aldrich Killian, who proposes a think tank called Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM). In the present day, a series of bombings attributed to a terrorist known as the Mandarin wreaks havoc, with no bomb fragments left behind. One of the bombings injures Stark’s friend and head of security, Happy Hogan, prompting Stark to issue a public threat to the Mandarin, revealing his home address.
In response, Stark's mansion is attacked by helicopters, and he narrowly escapes in an Iron Man suit, which flies him to rural Tennessee on autopilot, following an investigation he had programmed. With his suit nonfunctional and presumed dead, Stark investigates a local explosion bearing the Mandarin’s signature, discovering that the bombings were caused by soldiers subjected to Extremis, an experimental treatment developed by AIM to regenerate injured limbs, but which causes explosions when the subjects reject it.
Stark teams up with Harley, a young boy who helps him repair his suit. He traces the Mandarin to Miami, where he discovers that the Mandarin is actually an actor named Trevor Slattery, hired by Killian to pose as the terrorist. Killian reveals that he has been using Extremis to create super-soldiers and orchestrates the bombings as cover for their failures. He also reveals that he has kidnapped Pepper and subjected her to Extremis, hoping to use her as leverage against Stark.
With the help of Colonel James Rhodes, who dons the rebranded War Machine armor (Iron Patriot), Stark infiltrates Killian's base. They discover that Killian intends to attack President Ellis on Air Force One. Stark saves the passengers and crew but cannot stop Killian from kidnapping the President.
The final battle takes place on an oil rig, where Killian plans to kill the President on live television. Stark summons his legion of Iron Man suits, controlled remotely by JARVIS, to provide air support. Rhodes secures the President, and Stark finds Pepper, who has survived the Extremis procedure and gained enhanced abilities. In the ensuing fight, Pepper uses her new powers to kill Killian after Stark’s attempt fails.
In the aftermath, Stark orders JARVIS to destroy all his Iron Man suits as a gesture of his commitment to Pepper. He also undergoes surgery to remove the shrapnel near his heart, discarding the need for the arc reactor. In a voiceover, he reflects on the events, realizing that even without the suits, he will always be Iron Man.
The film closes with a post-credits scene where Stark recounts his story to Dr. Bruce Banner, who has fallen asleep, humorously acknowledging that Banner is not that kind of doctor.
"Iron Man 3" explores themes of identity, trauma, and the consequences of past actions. It delves into Stark's psyche, emphasizing his ingenuity and resilience beyond the armor, and serves as a pivotal chapter in his character's development within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
