"Spider-Man: Homecoming" (2017) reintroduces Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focusing on Peter Parker's struggles to balance his life as a high school student and a superhero. The film begins with a flashback to the aftermath of the Battle of New York, where Adrian Toomes and his salvage company are cleaning up the city. Their operation is shut down by the Department of Damage Control (DODC), a new government organization partnered with Tony Stark (Iron Man). Enraged by the loss of his livelihood, Toomes decides to keep the Chitauri technology he has already salvaged and uses it to create advanced weapons and technology, eventually becoming the villain known as the Vulture.
Fast forward to the present day, Peter Parker is adjusting to his new life after being recruited by Tony Stark to join the Avengers in the battle against Captain America in "Captain America: Civil War." Eager to prove himself as a worthy Avenger, Peter balances his high school life at Midtown School of Science and Technology with his secret identity as Spider-Man. He regularly checks in with Happy Hogan, Stark's head of security, but feels increasingly frustrated by the lack of significant missions and Stark's apparent disregard for his potential.
Peter's academic life includes his best friend Ned, who later discovers Peter's secret identity and becomes his confidant. Peter also harbors a crush on his classmate Liz and faces bullying from another student, Flash Thompson. During an academic decathlon trip to Washington, D.C., Peter uncovers a plot involving Toomes and his gang selling advanced weapons on the black market. He tries to intervene but is repeatedly warned by Stark to stay out of serious trouble and focus on being a "friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."
Defying Stark's advice, Peter continues to investigate Toomes and his operations, eventually leading to a confrontation on the Staten Island Ferry. During the fight, one of Toomes' weapons malfunctions, splitting the ferry in half. Peter's attempt to save the passengers nearly fails, but Stark arrives in time to help and confiscates Peter's Spider-Man suit, telling him he is not ready to be an Avenger.
Disheartened but determined, Peter returns to his normal life and asks Liz to the homecoming dance. On the night of the dance, Peter discovers that Liz's father is Adrian Toomes. The revelation shocks Peter, who realizes the true extent of his adversary's threat. Toomes, sensing Peter's unease, deduces his secret identity as Spider-Man and subtly warns him to stay out of his business.
Ignoring the warning, Peter abandons the dance and dons his homemade Spider-Man suit to stop Toomes from hijacking a plane carrying advanced technology from Stark Tower. The ensuing battle leads to a confrontation at Coney Island, where Peter risks his life to save Toomes, whose suit malfunctions and causes an explosion. Peter drags an unconscious Toomes out of the wreckage and leaves him for the authorities, along with the stolen technology.
Impressed by Peter's bravery and growth, Stark offers him a place among the Avengers and a new Spider-Man suit. Peter, however, chooses to remain a ground-level hero to focus on protecting his community and balancing his personal life. He returns home to find that Stark has returned his original suit, showing his support for Peter's decision.
In the mid-credits scene, Toomes is imprisoned and encounters Mac Gargan, a criminal who holds a grudge against Spider-Man. Gargan inquires about Spider-Man's identity, but Toomes, despite his defeat, chooses not to reveal Peter's secret. In the post-credits scene, Captain America humorously lectures about the importance of patience, poking fun at the concept of post-credits scenes.
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" explores themes of responsibility, identity, and the challenges of growing up, blending humor, action, and heartfelt moments. It solidifies Spider-Man's place within the MCU, emphasizing his role as a grounded, relatable hero who is still learning what it means to be a true hero.
