"Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) takes the Marvel Cinematic Universe's God of Thunder on a vibrant, humorous, and action-packed journey, reshaping the character and setting the stage for significant future events. The film begins with Thor imprisoned by the fire demon Surtur, who reveals that Thor's father, Odin, is no longer on Asgard, and the prophesied Ragnarok—the destruction of Asgard—is imminent. Surtur plans to unite his crown with the Eternal Flame, making him powerful enough to bring about Ragnarok. Thor defeats Surtur and takes his crown, believing he has averted the prophecy.
Returning to Asgard, Thor finds his brother Loki posing as Odin. Thor exposes Loki and forces him to reveal their father's location. They travel to Earth, where they discover that Odin, nearing the end of his life, is in Norway. Odin warns them that his death will free their older sister Hela, the Goddess of Death, who was imprisoned long ago for her ambition and ruthlessness. As Odin passes away, Hela appears and swiftly defeats Thor and Loki, shattering Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, and forcing them to flee through a portal.
Thor and Loki are separated during their escape and end up on the planet Sakaar, a chaotic world ruled by the Grandmaster. Thor is captured by a bounty hunter named Scrapper 142, who Thor later discovers is Valkyrie, a former Asgardian warrior who once fought Hela. Thor is forced to compete in the Grandmaster's gladiatorial contests and is shocked to find that the Grandmaster's champion is none other than the Hulk, who has been missing since the events of "Avengers: Age of Ultron." After a fierce battle, Thor convinces Hulk to help him escape and save Asgard.
Meanwhile, on Asgard, Hela consolidates her power, decimating its army and resurrecting her ancient dead warriors, including her giant wolf, Fenris. She appoints Skurge, a cowardly Asgardian, as her executioner. Heimdall, the former gatekeeper, leads the resistance against Hela and helps Asgardian citizens flee.
Back on Sakaar, Thor, with the help of Valkyrie and Loki, orchestrates a rebellion against the Grandmaster. They manage to escape through a portal known as the Devil's Anus and return to Asgard. Upon arrival, they face Hela in a final confrontation. Thor realizes that he cannot stop Ragnarok but can use it to defeat Hela. He sends Loki to place Surtur's crown in the Eternal Flame, resurrecting the fire demon and causing Ragnarok to begin.
As Surtur lays waste to Asgard, Thor and his allies battle Hela. Thor loses an eye in the fight but, inspired by a vision of Odin, taps into his full potential as the God of Thunder. Despite their efforts, Hela remains too powerful. With Asgard's destruction imminent, Thor and his companions evacuate the Asgardian people on a spaceship. Surtur ultimately destroys Asgard, and Hela is consumed in the cataclysm.
In the aftermath, Thor is crowned king of the surviving Asgardians and decides to lead them to Earth to find a new home. In a mid-credits scene, their spaceship encounters a larger vessel, foreshadowing the imminent arrival of Thanos, the Mad Titan. In a post-credits scene, the Grandmaster, having survived the rebellion, tries to placate the citizens of Sakaar.
"Thor: Ragnarok" is a transformative film for the character of Thor, blending director Taika Waititi's unique comedic style with epic action and character development. It emphasizes themes of identity, leadership, and the acceptance of change, presenting a fresh and dynamic take on the God of Thunder's adventures.
